Overview
The Department of Radiation Oncology offers a two-year position as a resident in radiation oncology physics. This program is one of the first programs in the nation accredited by CAMPEP. Responsibilities include clinical duties, teaching and professional advancement. Residents are assigned responsibilities under supervision related to patient care, physics consultations, patient treatment planning, dosimetry and quality assurance.
The successful candidate will join a team of five medical physicists, six radiation oncologists, four dosimetrists, two engineers and a senior medical physics resident. Research opportunities include ongoing programs in IMRT/IGRT, respiratory gating, radiopharmaceutical administration, stereotactic radiosurgery, brachytherapy and radiation oncology informatics.
There is one position available each year.

Application and Interview Process
Applicants are required to have graduated from a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program with an MS or PhD or completed a CAMPEP-accredited certificate program.

Application
Applications are accepted through the AAPM Medical Physics Residency Application Program (MP-RAP) typically between mid-October through early December. The top candidates will be invited for an on-site interview. The residency program does take part in the MedPhys Match program.
Stipends & Benefits
The stipend for medical physics residents is derived from the University of Louisville School of Medicine salary scale for medical residents; examples are $57,755 for PGY1 and $59,913 for PGY2. Each candidate that is invited for an interview will be updated with more specifics on salary and benefits.
University policy allows for four weeks of paid vacation per year, which can be taken on a per day basis, with a maximum of one week off clinical service allowed (with up to two weeks with additional permission during off-service periods).
Term life insurance is provided for all residents in the amount of double the annual stipend. The policy includes accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
Single coverage is subsidized by the University of Louisville and family coverage is available at group rates.
All house staff are covered by workers' compensation for any injuries or illnesses incurred as a result of assigned duties.
Long-term disability insurance is provided for residents free of charge. Residents have the option of converting the coverage from group to private at the end of their training as well as the option of purchasing additional coverage.
Coverage is provided for all residents, either by the University of Louisville or by the hospitals to which residents are assigned. This coverage applies only to assigned rotations that are part of residency training.
Commonwealth of Kentucky resident training licensure and renewal fees are paid by the department for the duration of residency in the program.
Residents have library privileges at the Kornhauser Library and at all of the affiliated hospitals. Available services include electronic literature, searches, and an inter-library loan service.
Two personalized lab coats with embroidered names are provided to residents at the beginning of their training.
The HSC Fitness Center is located within the medical campus. Spouses and dependents can join for a nominal charge. A wide array of recreational facilities on the UofL Belknap Campus may also be used by residents free of charge.
Close proximity covered garage parking is included free of charge to our department residents by the Office of Graduate Medical Education, a $398.00 value.
