Fellowship in Adult and Pediatric Spine Surgery Detail

One-year fellowship through the Norton Leatherman Spine Center

Overview

Annually, four fellows are accepted into the well established program which offers the development of advanced skills in all aspects of spine surgery. It is a well-balanced program that exposes the Fellows to the evaluation and treatment of deformities, fractures, neoplasms and degenerative conditions of the spine in patients of all ages. Extensive experience in anterior spinal surgery and surgery of the cervical spine is included in the fellowship.

The Fellow will gain experience in minimally invasive lumbar fusion techniques, including percutaneous fixation and minimally invasive interbody fusions. The Fellow will receive exposure in all aspects of instrumentation involving cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar decompression procedures are abundant. The surgical experience includes approximately 400 cases. Training and instruction are received from seven full-time orthopaedic spine surgeons who are affiliated with the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Weekly didactics include Monday morning case conference and a Thursday morning lectures series presented by the attending staff.

The Fellows will assist the staff physician performing surgery, managing patient care and participating in scoliosis and fracture clinics. The Norton Leatherman Spine Center offers unique exposure to both pediatric and adult spinal deformity. The Fellows will prepare publications and presentations for teaching conferences and recognized spine meetings. The Norton Leatherman Spine Center includes a clinical outcomes research center, with extensive health-related outcomes data on thousands of patients available to facilitate fellow research. This program is affiliated with Norton Healthcare and the orthopaedic department at the University of Louisville.
