Geriatric Medicine Fellowship

Our program is housed in the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine and is closely affiliated with the University of Louisville Trager Institute. We are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for this one year post-graduate education program for physicians who have completed a residency in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.

Fellows are exposed to a variety of clinical environments, including UofL Health - UofL Hospital, UofL Health - Jewish Hospital, Frazier Rehab Institute and the VA Medical Center. To prepare fellows for a wide range of career opportunities, fellows train in various clinical settings, including acute care, subacute rehab, long term care, outpatient clinic, program of all-inclusive care for the elderly (PACE) and home care.

As members of an interdisciplinary team, fellows gain experience in managing complex patients, leading a team and providing comprehensive geriatric care. Fellows learn about systems of care, quality improvement, educating others and advocacy.

Our goal is to train physicians to be geriatricians, educators, health systems experts, community leaders, advocates and innovators in change. Our graduates have taken career positions in many areas, including academic geriatricians, private practice geriatricians, VA geriatricians, as well as primary care physicians and subspecialists with board certification/certificate of added qualifications in geriatrics.
