The Adult Reconstruction Fellowship Program is an ACGME accredited fellowship that has been in existence at the University of Louisville since 1998. Two (2) positions are available for the one-year training program. We participate in the San Francisco Match. Prerequisites for acceptance into the program are completion of a residency program in orthopedic surgery and successful completion of USMLE steps I and II. If the candidate is a foreign candidate, then he or she must be board certified in his or her country of origin, must possesses current ECFMG certification and must obtain a Kentucky medical license. We prefer IMG’s with at least one-year of fellowship training in the United States. The university only sponsors J-1 visas.
During the one-year program, the fellow trains on the Department of Orthopedic Surgery’s Adult Reconstruction Service under the direction of Arthur Malkani, gratis faculty. The fellowship provides exposure to all aspects of primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. There is also exposure to osteotomies, malunions and nonunions of the lower extremity. The fellow will be involved in a minimum of 10-15 surgical cases each week, involving total joint arthroplasties, revisions of total joints and osteotomies and will be included in post operative care of patients along with daily rounds at the affiliated hospitals. The fellow will be involved weekly in the Adult Reconstruction Conferences and will participate in the weekly Total Joint Clinic held in the Ambulatory Care Building where he or she will see 15 – 20 patients one day per week. The fellow will see 40 – 50 follow up patients two days per week in a clinical setting under faculty supervision as part of his or her fellowship training. To further enhance the experience, they will participate in ongoing clinical projects, or may choose to begin his or her own clinical research project in the field of adult reconstruction. They will also be expected to complete two papers by the end of the fellowship year which are suitable for publication.
