One-year OTA-accredited fellowship

The Kuntscher Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship has been in existence since 1993. The educational goals of this one year OTA accredited trauma fellowship are to offer the fellow comprehensive exposure to the management of long bone and pelvic ring injuries, involving patient management from the time of injury, planning fracture treatment, fracture stabilization, post-operative care and rehabilitation at University Hospital, a level 1 Trauma Center. The fellow will round daily with their teaching attending and will see 25-30 patients three times per week in a clinical setting under the supervision of their teaching attending.

The fellow will serve as an integral part of a multi disciplinary trauma team focused at the University Hospital. Emphasis is placed on surgical management, post operative care and rehabilitation of patients with complex orthopaedic trauma, including polytrauma, long-bone fractures, complex articular fractures and those of the pelvis and acetabulum.

The focus of the training program will be patient care and surgical exposure to further the educational experience of the fellow. Each fellow is expected to complete one research project during his/her fellowship training and will work with the director on these projects and attend one international conference with the director.

Each fellow is expected to attend weekly Grand Rounds and Fracture Indications conferences where intense cases are discussed to further their educational exposure. Each fellow is evaluated at the end of his/her year of training. Finally, candidates applying for the program must demonstrate a distinctive desire to concentrate in the area of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery.
