DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

We are home to world-class investigators in basic and translational science, as well as award-winning educators. Our faculty have expertise in sensory systems, development and plasticity, neural injury and repair, neurodegenerative disease, aging and neuromodulation. We also emphasize anatomical sciences, neuroscience education and analytical and outcomes-based research. Students train with cutting-edge tools for circuit mapping, imaging and electrophysiology—from molecules to behavior. We maintain strong collaborations with the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology and the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center, fostering interdisciplinary research and innovation. Our fully supported PhD program offers specialized training in neuroscience, preparing students for successful careers in academia, industry, and beyond. Our trainees have received multiple National Research Service Awards, reflecting the strength of our training environment. Neuroscience is one of the university’s four strategic research pillars, fostering significant growth in faculty and research opportunities. Our faculty are internationally recognized for leading innovative and impactful research. We benefit from federally and privately funded research labs, driving forward cutting- edge scientific discoveries. We have access to modern research facilities and equipment, supporting state-of-the-art neuroscience research. The department of Anatomical Sciences & Neurobiology proudly hosts the Kentucky IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (KY INBRE), fostering statewide biomedical research collaborations.
