The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine is a welcoming community for accomplished and learning scientists. The department has 21 primary faculty with a diverse set of research interests, including autoimmunity, cancer immunology, vaccine development and vaccinology, infectious diseases, host/pathogen interaction, inflammation, molecular genetics and novel drug discovery. A robust research funding portfolio has enabled groundbreaking advances through the use of innovative next-generation technologies and approaches.
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology offers an exceptional training environment at the intersection of basic, clinical and translational science. Having a committed teaching and mentoring faculty means small class sizes and meaningful interactions between faculty and students. Most of our graduates remain in a science-related career, including successful careers in academia and industry, public health, intellectual property development, teaching, scientific communication and public policy.
The department is also dedicated to fostering an inclusive atmosphere that encourages collaboration and interdisciplinary research. By promoting partnerships with other departments, institutions, and industry leaders, we facilitate a dynamic exchange of ideas that enhances the learning experience. Students are encouraged to engage in collaborative projects, which enriches their education and equips them with essential skills for addressing real-world challenges. This supportive environment not only nurtures scientific curiosity but also prepares graduates to become leaders in their respective fields, making meaningful contributions to science and society.
