The University of Louisville Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) provides an integrated MD-PhD education designed to prepare the next generation of physician-scientists. Students receive rigorous scientific training, comprehensive clinical education and individualized mentorship in an environment where discovery and patient care are closely connected.
From foundational research to clinical application, our program equips trainees to address today's most pressing health challenges while preparing them to lead tomorrow's breakthroughs. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, nationally recognized research programs and meaningful community engagement, MSTP students develop the skills to translate scientific discoveries into improved patient outcomes.
Discovery
UofL students train with faculty across neuroscience, cancer, environmental health, cardiometabolic disease, infection and inflammation and translational science — areas that address major regional and national health needs.
Translation
Our program emphasizes the full translational pathway: from mechanisms of disease to clinical innovation, from patient observation to research discovery and from discovery to measurable improvements in health.
Community Impact
Community-engaged research is central to UofL’s identity. Students learn to partner with communities, address health inequities and design research that improves health in Louisville, Kentucky and beyond.
