Neurological Surgery Residency Program

Our program provides comprehensive training that combines distinguished faculty members, leading-edge research facilities and state-of-the-art surgery technology in a renowned Level 1 trauma center.

Overview

The UofL Department of Neurological Surgery offers a rigorous and comprehensive training program to provide our residents with the skills, knowledge and behaviors required to be future leaders of our field.

Our comprehensive curriculum provides progressive independence in the treatment and diagnosis of neurological disorders. Residents are exposed to all major sub-specialties, including trauma, neuro-oncology/skull base surgery, spine and peripheral nerve, vascular/endovascular neurosurgery, pediatric and functional/pain services. Under the guidance of over a dozen expert neurosurgery faculty, our residents get hands-on experience in the hospital, emergency department, operating room and clinic. They rotate through multiple leading-edge facilities, including UofL Health-Hospital, Jewish Hospital and Norton Children's Hospital. Integration in the robust trauma program at the University of Louisville provides an early expertise in the triage and treatment of advanced neurosurgery emergencies.

Our curriculum includes opportunities for a dedicated research year to explore an area of academic interest and an additional opportunity in the final year for a dedicated transition to practice, which can also include participation in one of our CAST-approved fellowships.
