What we stand for
Education
Graduate, medical and dental teaching are primary commitments of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. We offer formal training in advanced biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and genomics, cancer biology, bioinformatics and in a number of special topics and electives designed to focus on current problems in biochemistry and molecular genetics. The department joins with other basic science departments within the School of Medicine in the Integrated Programs in Biomedical Sciences (IPIBS). The goal of this program is to provide an interdisciplinary approach to the biomedical sciences, to support the future careers of all our students. Our goal is to not only have educated faculty, students and staff, but also prepare them to educate others.
Discovery
Our people are involved in interdisciplinary research as the driver of discovery to improve the health and education of all in our society. We provide hands on research training to graduate students through rotations in research labs in first year and ongoing research as they progress through their degree program. Through these interactions students become acquainted with theoretical and practical aspects of biochemistry and molecular genetics, cell biology, immunogenomics and big data analyses. Our faculty do cutting edge research supported by national funding agencies like NIH and DOD, to develop potentially new approaches to improving human health and education.
Service
The department is committed to supporting service at all levels, within the department, school and nationally. Our philosophy is that a complete graduate education should include experience in service and all are encouraged to serve on committees at all levels.
