Emergency Medicine Residency Detail
Overview
It is our mission to train our residents to be practice-ready on day one of whatever career in emergency medicine they may choose. To meet this goal, we provide focused mentorship from faculty who are subject experts in multiple areas of emergency medicine, including toxicology, EMS, wilderness medicine, ultrasound, tactical medicine and many more.
Our residents are cultivated in an environment that allows both progressive responsibility and the opportunity to see critically ill patients at all stages of training. In this environment, it is an honor to care for patients who are not only clinically complex and diverse, but also socially diverse. Residents will grow from being able to manage their own patients to effectively managing a department.
Program Details
Application and Interview Process
We hold both in-person and virtual interviews throughout the interview season. Interviews are typically conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays from November through early January.
Virtual interviews are held via Zoom. There is a virtual pre-interview social event for these interviews the Monday of each interview week. During this, applicants can meet residents and hear about living in Louisville.
We hold in-person interviews to give all applicants the chance to see our educational environment. With this in mind, if you have an educational completed a rotation with us, please elect to do a virtual interview.
There is no preference or competitive advantage to doing either interview type. We encourage applicants to interview in whatever format they prefer. We do not use this information in the ranking of applicants in any way, and aside from the opportunity to see our environment in person, the information contained within the interview day will be nearly identical.
We require at least one SLOE. However, more than one eSLOEs is highly encouraged, especially if an away EM rotation was completed at that site.
We welcome other letters of recommendation to supplement your ResidencyCAS application. This is optional.

All Residents receive four weeks vacation upon approval of the unit director. The dates will be determined by the administrative chief resident who may also consult the attending staff.
Residents receive up to six weeks of parental leave in addition to their typical vacation. Residents beyond 27 weeks of pregnancy are excused from night shifts on all EM rotations.
Malpractice coverage is provided by UofL, VAH, or private affiliated hospitals under terms of your contract. However, this coverage does not apply to any off-duty activities of employment.
Single and family coverage is available to all residents. You may sign up for insurance at General Orientation. For more information, call 852-6555.
Each resident receives, free of charge, life insurance for the value of twice the annual salary. Workers compensation, accidental death and dismemberment insurance are also provided. For details, call UofL at 852-7105.
Each member of the house staff has the following privileges:
- Medical School library usage; photocopy at minimum charge; research librarian assistance
- Faculty discount for higher priced seats for football games
- Free membership to Health Sciences Campus Fitness Center located in the parking garage
- A free annual PPD may be obtained from the Student Health Services, first floor of ACB, every weekday except Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Free UofL parking stickers (details in General Orientation).
- One pair of scrubs and clinical quarter-zip.
- Dedicated resident computer work stations are located in the residency office and department library
- The Department of Emergency Medicine Library has a collection of textbooks and journals in emergency medicine and other specialties. Residents are welcome to borrow these materials. The lending procedure is based on the honor system
In order to receive any of the above-listed fringe benefits, each resident must have a University identification card, issued on Orientation day.
The Department of Emergency pays for resident membership to the following organizations:
- American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
- Kentucky American College of Emergency Physicians (KACEP)
- American Association of Emergency Medicine (AAEM)
- Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM)
All memberships include journal subscription. Please visit individual organization websites (appendix) for additional benefits.
Any resident presenting a paper at an approved national or regional meeting may have travel defrayed by the department.
