Overview

The PM&R Residency Program at the University of Louisville offers unparalleled training experiences across premier medical institutions, including Frazier Rehabilitation Institute, UofL Hospital, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Norton Children's Hospital and Frazier Brownsboro. Residents gain invaluable clinical exposure to diverse injuries and conditions through seamless collaboration with acute care programs such as trauma, orthopedics and neurosurgery. Additionally, our referral centers, including the UofL Health - Brown Cancer Center, immerse residents in managing rare and complex medical conditions, fostering expertise and confidence in rehabilitation medicine.

Hands-on procedure training
Residents develop exceptional skills in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under the mentorship of highly trained physicians. From ultrasound-guided to fluoroscopically-guided techniques, residents gain hands-on experience in a variety of office-based and procedural settings. The program emphasizes mastery of pain management, spasticity treatments and other interventions critical to comprehensive patient care. With rotations across inpatient, outpatient and consultation settings, residents benefit from balanced exposure to the full spectrum of PM&R practice. Elective opportunities further empower residents to explore specialized interests within the field.

Research, education and wellness
Our comprehensive didactic curriculum prepares residents for board certification and fosters lifelong learning. Through the Research and Quality Improvement Curriculum, residents refine critical thinking, engage in scholarly projects and complete quality improvement initiatives with dedicated mentorship. Equally prioritized is resident wellness, with a supportive work environment, quarterly half wellness days and recreational activities such as holiday parties, retreats and intramural sports to promote balance and camaraderie.

Residency by the numbers
Residents graduate with robust procedural experience, averaging over 500 procedures including EMGs, peripheral injections, Botox injections, axial injections and ultrasound exams and procedures. This depth of training ensures readiness for advanced practice and leadership in rehabilitation medicine.
