Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Residency Detail

Our mission is to provide a balanced and supportive learning environment that equips trainees for successful careers in Pathology.

Overview

Our Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency program provides a dynamic learning environment that paves the way for a rewarding and valuable career in Pathology. This is achieved through a focus on active learning, with increasing responsibilities during both AP and CP rotations.

We are a leader in the utilization of digital pathology and AI in daily clinical work, education and research.  In addition, our program features board-relevant and practice-oriented didactics delivered through morning lectures, on-rotation teaching and a visiting lecture series.

We support required scholarly activities and provide personalized guidance through our Residency Program Office and dedicated individualized mentorship and wellness programs. Most AP and CP core and elective rotations are conducted across four major hospitals in downtown Louisville, all located nearby. These include UofL Health - UofL Hospital and the Brown cancer Center, UofL Health - Jewish Hospital, Norton Hospital and Norton Children’s Hospital. Residents gain experience at these institutions through exposure to over 35,000 Surgical Pathology and Hematopathology cases and consults, 3,500 cytopathology cases and more than 3 million laboratory procedures annually.

Our residents have a robust autopsy experience. In addition to adult and pediatric hospital autopsies, the Medical Examiner’s service contributes over 1,000 autopsies each year. Our program accommodates 13 residents, who have an opportunity to work beside both AP and CP fellows. Graduates have secured fellowships in both AP and CP at prestigious academic institutions and have gone on to successful careers in academic or private practice pathology.
