Chair’s Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (BMG). Our roots date back to 1918 and a single minded goal for more than a century has been to improve the health, education and opportunities of all Kentuckians. This is achieved by supporting the School of Medicine and Dentistry’s mission to train first class clinicians, graduate students, post-docs and to do research to better the lives of all of humanity.

Our focus is on education, research and service. Our education programs support medical, dental and graduate and post-graduate students in application of biochemical and genetic principles to the understanding of disease processes. We offer advanced degrees (MS and PhD) in a range of topic areas including, cancer, neuroscience, cardiac disease, immunogenomics, environment/genetic interactions and bioinformatics.

Our multi-disciplinary research endeavors are supported by a robust research portfolio funded by NIH, DOD and many private foundations. Our focus areas are cancer, immunogenomics, gene/environment interactions and bioinformatics, which is now critical for all areas of biomedical research. The training students receive sets them up for successful careers in many areas including biomedical research, either academic or industry based, policy, teaching and many others that require critical problem solving skills.

We house state of the art genomic core facilities providing, whole genome and RNA sequencing, single cells Omics and spatial Omics technology.

If you are interested in any area of biomedical research, teaching or service there is no better place than BMG. Become a Cardinal and join our growing department.
