Overview
The Diagnostic Radiology Program strives to produce well rounded radiologists with exposure to all facets of radiology, whom are able to excel in an academic or private practice setting. We aim to provide excellent patient care to our community. This is achieved by providing residents with a comprehensive educational curriculum combined with a vast patient population afforded by UofL Health which includes a level one trauma center, accredited stroke center, Neuroscience collaborative center, Brown Cancer Center and Transplant Center. The Veteran’s Hospital with a full complement of radiologic services enhances our residents’ exposure to a wide variety of cases. Our program strives for continued support for residents’ academic accomplishments which will provide a framework for future endeavors.
This video highlights the Department of Radiology’s commitment to advancing patient care through cutting-edge imaging, innovative research, and expert clinical collaboration. It showcases how state-of-the-art technology and a highly skilled team come together to deliver accurate diagnoses, support treatment decisions, and improve outcomes across a wide range of medical specialties.

Residency Application Information
The residency encourages all eligible medical students / medical residents to apply regardless of race, color, national origin or sex.
All interviews for radiology residency positions will be conducted virtually during the 2025-2026 academic year, following the recruitment recommendation of the AMA (American Medical Association) and the APDR (Association of Program Directors in Radiology).
1
Available Radiology Residency Positions
For the 2026 Main Residency Match, we will have seven positions available for the radiology residency class starting July 1, 2027.
ESIR (Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology)
We allow two residents per class to be on the ESIR track. Residents interested in IR will interview for ESIR in the spring of their second year.
2
ERAS Application
We only accept applications via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System) and the following must be submitted for consideration: ERAS application, three letters of recommendation (at least one radiology letter is highly recommended), ECFMG status, USMLE transcript, medical school transcript and personal statement.
The program follows ERAS residency application timelines. It is highly recommended to submit your application within the first week of ERAS opening to residency programs.
Diagnostic Radiology is a participating specialty utilizing the supplemental ERAS application. Applicants will have fifteen program signals, six gold and nine silver.
We do participate in ERAS’s couples match.
3
USMLE Scores
We use a holistic approach while reviewing applications. With the change in USMLE Step 1 to pass/fail, a Step 2 numerical score must be available at the time of application. The program reviews Step 2 scores before extending interview offers. The program’s current average Step 2 score is 243.
4
Preliminary Year
Candidates match separately for preliminary years. The University of Louisville Internal Medicine program is excellent.
5
Osteopathic Medical School Graduates
We accept and interview students from osteopathic medical schools. We do require the USMLE Step 2 numerical score as above to be released at the time of application. USMLE Step 1 is no longer required for DO applicants.
6
International Medical Graduates
ECFMG certification is required by the time of application. Please note that J-1 visas are the only visa type that the university sponsors for medical residents.
