About the Program
The Anesthesia Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Louisville is a one-year program which provides a comprehensive, diverse critical care training opportunity within UofL Health, a fully integrated regional academic health system.
The primary site of training is at UofL Health - UofL Hospital, the region’s major tertiary referral center and only level one adult trauma and dedicated burn center. Additional training is at adjacent UofL Health - Jewish Hospital, an internationally renowned center for comprehensive cardiovascular care. The fellow is expected to spend a minimum of nine months in the care of critically ill patients in ICUs or transitional care units; the remainder of training time is spent in elective clinical activities, research and scholarly activity relevant to critical care.
The fellow who completes the program will be well versed in evidence-based critical care practice and will be eligible for and expected to successfully complete the American Board of Anesthesiology Examination for Certification in Critical Care Medicine or the equivalent with the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Core rotations for the fellowship include the Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU), Neuro ICU, Trauma/Surgical ICU, Transplant and Burn ICU. In addition to the nine months of core ICU rotations, the fellowship offers a vast array of electives such as TTE/TEE, palliative care, research, nephrology, infectious disease and nutrition/speech. In the ICUs, the fellows will be responsible for participating in multidisciplinary rounds, formulating care plans and facilitating communication between the critical care team and surgical services, consultants and family members.
Complimenting the robust clinical component of the fellowship is a didactic curriculum covering essential critical care topics and critical care echocardiography. Didactics consist of weekly topic discussions, journal club discussions, M&M conferences and an integrated critical care echocardiography curriculum.
Fellows are engaged with academic projects during their fellowship including a quality improvement initiative, clinical or basic science research, presenting at SCCM or SOCCA conferences and participation in anesthesia and critical care grand grounds.
