Overview
As of October 1, 2012, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a recognized subspecialty of Emergency Medicine, now boasting over 76 ACGME accredited fellowships. Created in 2014, the mission of the University of Louisville’s Department of Emergency Medicine’s Division of EMS is twofold: to provide both service and education to our community.
The EMS fellowship at the University of Louisville Department of Emergency Medicine features the opportunity to train in numerous settings including a large "3rd service" EMS, fire-based, rural, air medical, tactical medical services and pediatric critical care transport services. The Metro Louisville area has a population of approximately 1 million and is well known for its friendly hospitality and a wealth of great independent
restaurants. The Division of EMS has 3 full-time faculty members and is supported by additional part-time faculty. Among the highlights of the program:
- EMS Fellow and faculty response vehicles
- Faculty members with decades of EMS experience at local, state, national and international levels.
- Critical-care ground and air medical experiences
- Opportunities to work with police tactical elements
- Mass gathering medicine at Kentucky Derby, marathons, Iron-Man competition, PGA
- EMS event medicine opportunities, including music festivals and UofL Athletics
- Experience in a state-of-the-art PSAP/Communications/Dispatch center
- Clinical experience in the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region
Educational activities include teaching Emergency Medicine (EM) residents the components of the EM curriculum that overlap with the EMS specialty as well as providing pre-hospital personnel with high quality instruction via both initial certification programs and continuing medical education classes.
