Overview
The goal of the University of Louisville Department of Neurology Adult Neurology Residency Program is designed to is to provide a strong foundation upon which a successful career in neurology is built .A successful academic experience is fostered through exposure to diverse faculty, nationally recognized within their field, with well-defined research exposure with the final goal of major journal publications/national meeting presentations by the end of residency. Our faculty mentorship program matches residents with faculty of similar sub-specialty interests, helping them plan for the future.

Application and Interview Process
The University of Louisville, School of Medicine (UofL SOM) Neurology Residency program is an ACGME accredited training, (ACGME #1802021042) under the directorship of Dr. Adriana E. Palade since September 2016.

ERAS Application
UofL Neurology will start accepting applications when ERAS opens in September 2024 for 6 -PGY1 positions (listed in ERAS as Categorical- Neurology- NRMP Code: 1217180C0) to start July 1, 2025. We will accept applications until December 10th. Virtual interviews are held between late October 2024- January 2025.
Please do not email application documentation to the Program Director or Coordinator.
Applicants MUST be registered with NRMP to participate in the 2025 NRMP Match. Applicants who are not registered with NRMP cannot be considered for a residency position.

UofL School of Medicine Requirements
UofL SOM Requirements:
- For all PGY levels, UofL SOM utilizes only the J1 Visa; changes to visa status must be completed before training can begin.
- FMG’s must have current ECFMG certification
- J-1 Visa, green card, EAD or US citizenship
- Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
- Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- Graduates of medical schools outside of the United States and Canada who have current valid certificates from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). In addition, schools located outside the U.S. and Canada must
- Be officially recognized in good standing in the country where they are located
- Be registered as a medical school, college, or university in the International Medical Education Directory
- Require that all courses must be completed by physical on-site attendance in the country in which the school is chartered.
- Possess a basic course of clinical and classroom medical instruction that is not less than 32 months in length; and

Program Specific Requirements
- USMLE scores must be a 210 or above, passed on first attempt; COMLEX scores 450 or above, passedon first attempt.
- All steps must be completed prior to entering PGY-2 year
- ERAS Letters of recommendation (LOR)
- focus on Neurology interest
- LOR from a Program Director and Department Chair
- FMG’s should have at least one (1) LOR from US Clinical Experience
- Medical School Graduation:
- Candidates with five (5) or more years after graduation: We would expect to see detail accounting of where the candidate has been, what the candidate has been involved in since graduation and their contribution to neurology detailed in a neurology focused personal statement.
- Substantial US clinical experience is preferred
- Short term observerships are not viewed as a substantial US clinical experience
- Program does take into consideration limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic

Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure (KBML) Requirement
- First year resident’s licenses will be processed through the Graduate Medical Education Office. The resident must obtain an “R” or “Full” license BEFORE the beginning of their PGY2 year of training through the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure. (http://kbml.ky.gov/)

The month of July is dedicated as the "Orientation-Emergency Lectures" month.
Tuesday Case Conference/Journal Club/ M&M conf, Thursday RITE Reviews and Friday Neurology didactics assignments are made by chief resident.
Grand Rounds:
UofL Neuroscience Grand Rounds Conferences, with continuing medical education (CME) provided, are held the 1st and 3rd Thursday each month, in alternating fashion with UofL Neurosurgery and KSCIRC Departments.
UofL Neurology Grand Rounds Conferences, with no CME provided, are held the 2nd, 4th and 5th Thursday each month. Topics such as stress & fatigue, diversity, neurology focused topics are presented.
Adriana E. Palade, MD has served as Program Director of the Neurology Residency Program at the University of Louisville School of Medicine since September 2016 and as Interim Department of Neurology Chair since July 2023.
Dr. Palade completed Medical School training at University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Carol Davila” in Bucharest, Romania in 1995 and Neurology Residency at University Hospital in Bucharest, Romania in 1997. Dr. Palade matched at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA where she completed a Medicine Internship in 1998 and Neurology Residency in 2001. After residency, she completed a Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC in 2002.
In 2002, Dr. Palade joined West Virginia University Department of Neurology where she served as Director of EEG Laboratory/ Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for 13 years.
In August 2015, Dr. Palade started her UofL Neurology journey! She currently serves as Director of the Neurology Residency Program, Director of the Epilepsy Surgical Program, Chief of the Division of Epilepsy and Vice Chair for Service of the Neurology C.A.R.E.S Committee. In June 2019, the residents voted Dr. Palade as “Best Teaching Faculty at UofL Neurology”! In July 2022, UofL Medical Students selected her as a Student Champion, a faculty member that goes above and beyond their duties to provide exceptional or critical support to students during their Neurology rotations.
Dr. Palade is American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) Board-Certified in Neurology (2002), Clinical Neurophysiology (2007), Sleep Medicine (2007) and Epilepsy (2014). Nationally, she serves on ABPN Clinical Neurophysiology Committee Subspecialty Examination (since 2009) and the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting Reviewer (since 2013).
In her free time, Dr. Palade loves gardening and spending time with her husband, 3 kids and fur baby.
Night Float Call
Residents take night float call Sunday- Friday, from 7a-7p. One resident is assigned to University Hospital (ULH) covering General and Stroke and one assigned to Jewish Hospital (JH).

Weekend Call
Resident weekend call at ULH is two- 12 hour shifts, Saturday 7a- Saturday 7p and Saturday 7p- Sunday 7a-
Resident weekend call at JH is one- 24 hour, Saturday 7a- Sunday 7a
.
In addition, a 12 hour call shift occurs on Sunday between 7a-7p, with one resident assigned to ULH and one at JH.
