Our accredited five-year program offers residents a progressive and comprehensive learning experience designed to develop essential clinical, surgical and professional skills in otolaryngology. Residents benefit from exposure to a wide range of specialties, including General Surgery, Critical Care and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, fostering a well-rounded foundation for a career in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
Our curriculum integrates clinical rotations, didactic conferences, specialized dissection courses and research opportunities, providing diverse training across public, private and veterans hospitals. Residents gain expertise in key areas such as head and neck surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric otolaryngology and sleep medicine. We emphasize not only technical proficiency but also the interpersonal skills and professionalism required to deliver high-quality, cost-effective care to a variety of patient populations.
The mission of the University of Louisville Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program is: To train outstanding surgeons who are compassionate, skillful and safe in patient care and become board-certified otolaryngologists with active roles in leadership and teaching in their community; to develop and use scholarly principles and scientific research to guide clinical judgment and teaching skills; to utilize multidisciplinary care systems in a metropolitan setting to treat a wide patient population locally and regionally under ethical and morally sound principles.

Application and Interview Process
Application Procedure
The following information outlines the process for medical students applying for an otolaryngology residency beginning on July 1, 2025.
Applicants must have their files completed for screening prior to receiving an invitation to interview. Residency applications, recommendation letters, transcripts, USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores, etc. must be submitted to our program through ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service. The Otolaryngology Residency Review Committee will screen all applicants and invitations will be issued. Those selected for an interview will be notified via ERAS. The AAMC has teamed up with Thalamus, a centralized platform that simplifies and enhances the interview scheduling and management process.

Term life insurance is provided for all residents in the amount of double the annual stipend. The policy includes accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
The University offers a complete package of insurance coverage for our residents and their families, including health, dental, vision, prescription, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Life, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), Supplemental Life, Short Term Disability and Long-Term Care. Single and family coverage is available at group rates. Several different plans at varying costs are available to choose from. Residents may choose Premium Conversion, which permits payment of premiums with automatic deduction of pre-tax dollars from the resident's monthly salary. The Dental Clinic in the Ambulatory Care Building will provide an annual examination, including cleaning and x-rays, to residents free of charge.
Each year the program will fund DEA licensure for all PGY-2 residents.
All house staff are covered by workers' compensation for any injuries or illnesses incurred as a result of assigned duties.
Coverage is provided for all residents, either by the University of Louisville or by the hospitals to which residents are assigned. This coverage applies only to assigned rotations that are part of residency training
Long-term disability insurance is provided for residents free of charge. Residents have the option of converting the coverage from group to private at the end of their training as well as the option of purchasing additional coverage.
Hepatitis B immunization and an annual TB skin test are required and administered free of charge.
Commonwealth of Kentucky resident training licensure and renewal fees are paid by the department for the duration of residency in the program.
Residents are given 4 weeks paid vacation, usually divided into 2 weeks taken every 6 months.
The University of Louisville Physician Placement Services provides free assistance to residents seeking practice opportunities in Kentucky. Call Jan Hurst at 1-800-821-1088.
Residents have library privileges at the Kornhauser Library and at all of the affiliated hospitals. Available services include electronic literature, searches and an inter-library loan service. Our department has a librarian assigned who can assist with literature searches for grand rounds presentations, posters and manuscripts.
Lab coats with embroidered names are provided to residents at the beginning of their training.
Additional benefits may include textbooks, professional dues, or funds for travel to educational meetings.
The HSC Fitness Center is located within the medical campus. Spouses and dependents can join for a nominal charge. A wide array of recreational facilities on the UL Belknap Campus may also be used by residents free of charge.
