Research Overview

Our Pediatric Gastroenterology Division is actively engaged in innovative, patient-centered research aimed at improving diagnostic methods and therapeutic strategies for children with complex gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Recent studies have explored the clinical and histopathologic features of acute severe hepatitis linked to Human Herpesvirus 6 infection, contributing to a deeper understanding of viral hepatitis in pediatric populations.

Our team has also demonstrated the feasibility and tolerability of transnasal endoscopy as a less invasive diagnostic option for children and adolescents with eosinophilic esophagitis, enhancing the patient experience while maintaining diagnostic accuracy. Additionally, our research supports weekly folic acid supplementation as a safe and convenient alternative to daily dosing for pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease on methotrexate, offering a more flexible approach to care.

As part of the University of Louisville School of Medicine Pediatric Research Institute and Norton Children's Research Institute, our faculty and fellows can access cutting-edge research resources with minimal administrative burdens. With over 200 clinical research professionals and 300+ active studies, including Phase 1-3 clinical trials, we are at the forefront of pediatric research and clinical advancements.
