Overview
We are committed to developing a top-tier urology residency program that will carry on the tradition of excellence established in the past. The primary goal of this residency program is to produce urologists competent to practice state-of-the-art urology and who will be prepared to continue life-long continuing education. Graduates will have the necessary didactic, technical and clinical exposure necessary to meet the requirements for certification by the American Board of Urology (patient care and medical knowledge). Graduates interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine, medical research, or fellowship training within a sub-specialty of urology will have the appropriate preparation for additional training or successful entry into their chosen career path.
All graduates will have broad exposure to and understanding of the moral, ethical and regulatory aspects of establishing and conducting a successful urological practice (professionalism and systems-based practice). This includes education in medical administration (systems-based practice), leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, the tenets of life-long professional development (professionalism) and the ability to function successfully in today’s medical environment (systems-based practice).
The University of Louisville Urology Residency Program was awarded a 10-year, full-cycle ACGME accreditation in June 2012, followed by continued accreditation in 2024. We are honored to be recognized for our achievement and look forward to an exciting future at the University of Louisville. Through the collective efforts of a dedicated team of professors, residents and support staff and under the guidance of our program director, Uzoma A. Anele, and chairman, Murali K. Ankem, the program is emerging as one of the most desirable programs in the region.
Program Details
Application Process
The following information outlines the process for medical students applying for the urology residency program. Applicants must have their files completed for screening prior to receiving an invitation to interview. Applications must be submitted using ERAS. A complete application contains the documents listed below.

ERAS application
Interview Dates for 2027-28 Match
Interview dates will be determined subject to the guidelines set forth by the ACGME, AAMC and SAU.
The University of Louisville Department of Urology will only accept applications via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System). To learn more about ERAS, you may access their website via the link below.
Residents will be appointed through the AUA residency match and selected based on potential to successfully complete their training and certification process. Step I scores, medical school transcripts, letters of recommendation and interviews will be used to select residency candidates. The residency committee, consisting of the entire urology faculty, must meet and prepare the match list which will be submitted by the program director.
Applications submitted to ERAS must be complete by October 1st to be considered. A complete application includes: ERAS application, Step I scores, three (3) letters of recommendation, ECFMG status, USMLE or COMLEX transcript, medical school transcript, curriculum vitae and personal statement. As the program reviews hundreds of applications during this time, we ask that you refer to our website and the University of Louisville School of Medicine website for information on applying to the program. Phone calls from applicants will not be accepted or voice messages returned during this process. Interviews take place November through December.

MSPE letter (Dean's Letter) - after October 1st
Uploading the MSPE
Residency applicants’ Designated Dean’s Office is responsible for uploading the MSPE into the ERAS system.
- IMGs Only: IMG residency applicants must indicate in the MyERAS portal if they themselves or their medical school will provide a MSPE to the ERAS Documents office at the ECFMG. Instructions for submission can be found on the ECFMG website.
- If an IMG applicant previously answered these questions on the Additional Documents page, their response will be displayed and they will have an opportunity to modify their responses if needed before they certify and submit their application.
- If an IMG applicant did not previously answer these questions, they will need to do so before they certify and submit their application.
Assigning the MSPE
- Residency applicants do not assign the MSPE; it is automatically sent to all the programs to which an applicant applies. Applicants will see “No Available Action” in the Additional Documents section.
- Fellowship applicants must make assignments of the MSPE to the programs they designate:
- The MSPE can be assigned at any time, including before it is uploaded.
- The MSPE can be assigned to any saved or applied to programs from the Additional Documents page by selecting “Assign” under the Actions column.

USMLE I and II scores
USMLE scores are an important factor in the residency matching process, but they are not the only factor. The importance of USMLE scores varies by specialty and the level of competition. It is highly recommended that the applicant complete both Step 1 and 2 to be considered for interview.
-
Step 1
While Step 1 is now pass/fail, a score in or above the 75th percentile can help you secure interviews. A score of 230–245 is considered good, while a score of 245–250 is considered outstanding. A score above 250 can lead to near-guaranteed matches.
-
Step 2 CK
A score above 255 can help you secure residency interviews. A score in or above the 75th percentile can boost your chances of landing your preferred residency spot. The Step 2 CK score is one of the most important factors that programs use to evaluate you as a residency applicant.

- If an IMG applicant did not previously answer these questions, they will need to do so before they certify and submit their application.
- The EFDO is responsible for uploading the MS transcript into the ERAS system for fellowship applicants. Applicants should visit the EFDO website for information about submitting the MS transcript for upload.
