Pediatricians Urging Safety and Health

Pediatricians Urging Safety and Health (PUSH) is a resident-led advocacy group that promotes child health through legislative and community outreach. In partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the State of Kentucky, local schools and community organizations, PUSH engages in initiatives ranging from food bank gardens to advocating with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. Residents help curate monthly advocacy conferences, participate in Children’s Day at the Capitol and attend the AAP Legislative Conference. The group also organizes the Tri-Resident Cup, a competition that supports community projects. In 2021, the event led to significant donations, including nearly 1,700 canned goods, 4,400 books and funds for safety equipment. PUSH was honored with the Leonard P. Rome CATCH Visiting Professorship Grant in 2019-2020 to enhance advocacy training and community collaboration.

Global Health

The UofL School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics provides pediatric clinical care in Ghana as part of our global health program. The department has a long-standing commitment to health equity across the world, beginning in the 1990s with efforts in Eastern Europe with exchange programs in Romania, Poland and Moldova. We now partner with the Tamale Teaching Hospital in Ghana as part of the AMPATH Global Health Consortium. The work of our learners and faculty in Ghana supports research and education in clinical health. We offer subspecialty care, host two-way exchange of learners and initiate research grants focused on child health.

Smoketown Family Wellness Center

Our collaboration with the Smoketown Family Wellness Center exemplifies our commitment to community outreach. Residents have actively volunteered at events such as Trunk or Treat, where they engage with families in a fun and festive environment. They have also helped cultivate the community garden, promoting healthy eating and sustainability. Additionally, residents provide essential education to families on vaccines, ensuring that the community is informed and equipped to make healthy choices for their children.
