Welcome From Division Chief
The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine is committed to advancing academic medicine through excellence in clinical care, education, research and innovation. Our faculty are deeply engaged in educational leadership within the university and across regional and national organizations, reflecting our strong commitment to shaping the future of pediatric healthcare. We are also home to a nationally recognized simulation program that promotes a culture of safety through interprofessional education, procedural training and the identification of latent safety threats that improve patient outcomes.
Education and mentorship are central to our mission. Through a combination of didactic lectures, small-group learning, simulation experiences and bedside teaching in the emergency department, we prepare learners to recognize and manage critically ill and injured children with confidence and skill. Our Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship, established in 1991, offers comprehensive clinical, educational and leadership training for physicians pursuing careers in pediatric emergency medicine. Fellows benefit from customizable tracks in ultrasound, quality improvement, medical education and simulation, as well as opportunities to pursue advanced degrees and certificate programs through the University of Louisville.
Research is a cornerstone of our academic mission and drives our efforts to improve child health and emergency care delivery. Faculty are actively engaged in a broad range of investigations addressing critical issues in pediatric emergency medicine, including pediatric injury patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic, universal suicide screening, vaccine hesitancy and long COVID in children. Additional research explores neighborhood food insecurity and birth outcomes, the role of doulas in neonatal intensive care settings, innovations in medical education and the development of clinical tools and social care models that enhance care in emergency settings. Through these efforts, we seek to translate discovery into meaningful improvements in patient care and health outcomes.
