About Us

Welcome From Division Chief

University of Louisville Division of Pediatric Rheumatology is dedicated to advancing the care, research and education of children with rheumatologic, autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Our faculty, trainees and staff share a commitment to improving the lives of children and families through compassionate clinical care, innovative research and excellence in medical education.

Our division is recognized for its leadership in the diagnosis and treatment of complex pediatric rheumatologic disorders. We combine nationally recognized expertise with a collaborative, patient-centered approach that addresses the unique needs of children with chronic and often life-altering conditions. By placing patients and families at the center of everything we do, we strive to improve both short-term outcomes and long-term quality of life.

Our faculty are actively engaged in clinical investigation, translational science and collaborative research efforts that seek to advance understanding of rare and complex rheumatologic diseases. We are particularly focused on understanding disease variability and developing personalized treatment approaches for conditions such as Kawasaki disease, juvenile fibromyalgia and lupus nephritis. Our work also examines the psychosocial and functional impact of chronic illness on children and adolescents, ensuring that research findings translate into meaningful improvements in patient care and well-being.

Through leadership roles in the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) and participation in international consensus-building initiatives, our faculty contribute to shaping the future of pediatric rheumatology on a national and global scale. We are also engaged in translational research exploring the microbiome, novel diagnostic tools and emerging therapies that have the potential to transform how rheumatologic diseases are diagnosed and managed.

Collaboration is fundamental to our success. Our division works closely with colleagues in Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Cardiology, Neurology and Adult Rheumatology to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for children with complex conditions. These partnerships foster innovative clinical and research initiatives, including the development of multidisciplinary clinics that bring together experts from multiple specialties to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care.

Education and mentorship are deeply embedded in our mission. Our faculty play an integral role in training medical students, residents and fellows while helping shape the next generation of pediatric rheumatologists. Led by faculty recognized at the highest levels of the specialty, including a Master of the American College of Rheumatology and a recipient of the prestigious James Cassidy Award, our division is committed to fostering a culture of lifelong learning, intellectual curiosity and academic excellence.

Through our complementary expertise and passion for clinical care, research and education, we have created an environment that supports innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration and professional growth. We believe that advancing pediatric rheumatology requires not only scientific discovery but also strong partnerships, effective mentorship and a steadfast commitment to the children and families we serve.
