UofL dermatology leader honored with national mentorship award
April 15, 2026Through a distinguished career marked by clinical excellence, national leadership and a deep commitment to mentorship, Jeffrey Callen, chief of the Division of Dermatology, has made a lasting impact on the field of dermatology and the broader medical community.
From his early days at the University of Michigan to his decades of service at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Callen has become a pillar of the dermatological world. Since 1988, he has served in the role of division chief and as the inaugural Lafayette G. Owen Endowed Chair of Dermatology, guiding the division through nearly four decades of growth and advancement.
As a nationally recognized leader, his influence reaches far beyond the classroom and clinic; as a past president of the American Dermatological Association and the Editor-in-Chief of the Dermatology Section of UpToDate, he has helped shape the very standards of care used by physicians across the globe. In 2016, he became the first dermatologist to ever be named a “Master of Rheumatology” reflecting an elite level of expertise across disciplines.
His contributions have been consistently recognized, including annual designation among Best Doctors since 1992. In addition to his professional achievements, he remains deeply embedded in the Louisville community, serving on the boards of the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family and Vocational Services, Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Kentucky Arts and Crafts Foundation and the Speed Art Museum, enriching the lives and environments of the very people he has spent his career healing.
While these accomplishments are significant, colleagues and mentees point Callen’s most profound contribution to the medical community cannot be found in a textbook, but in the enduring impact he has had on the lives and careers of his fellow physicians and trainees.
“Despite his innumerable accomplishments, the most incredible thing about Dr. Callen may be that he always takes the time to find creative ways to help others, to enhance their lives and to propel their careers forward.” shared Ruth Ann Vleugels, MD, MPH, MBA, FAAD.
This year, Callen was awarded the William D. James, MD, Mentor of the Year Award by the American Academy of Dermatology. The award honors individuals who have demonstrated a long-standing commitment to mentoring and, as a result, has had a positive impact on their mentees' careers and advanced the field as a whole.
Callen’s approach to mentorship is both intentional and personal. He has built lasting relationships with trainees and colleagues, identifying emerging talent and helping guide the next generation of leaders in dermatology.
“Jeff has served as the field of dermatology’s ‘talent scout’ in medical dermatology,” said Dr. Misha Rosenbach. “I can think of no one else who has managed to personally connect with each and every ‘rising star’ in medical dermatology over the last 20-30 years.”
For many, his mentorship has been transformative. His mentees shared they would never have achieved their current success without Callen’s steadfast guidance and personal support.
“Jeff has consistently gone above and beyond to provide professional opportunities that have significantly impacted my career development as well as built my national recognition as an academic medical dermatologist,” shared Dr. Jennifer E. Yeh.
Through these efforts, Callen has helped foster a culture of collaboration, generosity and excellence at both UofL and across the field of dermatology. By modeling not only clinical expertise but also the importance of supporting others, he has created a ripple effect that will continue to shape the profession for years to come.
Callen’s career stands as a powerful reminder that while clinical skill can change individual lives, mentorship has the ability to transform an entire field.
