Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship clinical, academic and research training for pediatrics and emergency medicine residents, focusing on advanced care and education.

Overview

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Norton Children’s Hospital, established in 1991, trains fellows with a focus on clinical care, education, research and leadership in pediatric emergency medicine. Our program is open to pediatrics and internal medicine/pediatrics residents, offering a three-year track for pediatrics-trained residents and a two-year track for emergency medicine residents.

Norton Children’s Hospital, the region's primary pediatric referral center, treats over 70,000 patients annually. Fellows gain exposure to a wide range of clinical problems and sub-specialties. They progressively supervise and teach residents and students in the emergency department and receive formal training in lecture design and teaching methods.

Fellows also have opportunities to pursue additional education, such as Master’s degree or certificate programs through the University of Louisville Graduate School. Tuition and related costs are covered by the division. Fellows are expected to complete independent research projects, meeting requirements for board eligibility in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Our program includes structured research training, with fellows designing, conducting and analyzing their projects under faculty supervision. They also attend regular meetings with the Research Director and Scholarly Oversight Committee. Fellows complete a curriculum that includes quality improvement, radiology, ultrasound, simulations, ECG reviews and procedural labs, among other opportunities. By the end of the fellowship, fellows are prepared for the sub-specialty certifying examination.
