Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship

We train the next generation of pediatric hospitalists as skilled clinicians, innovative educators, advocates and compassionate physicians by providing knowledge, mentorship and resources.

Overview

The Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Fellowship Program is a two-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to train the next generation of pediatric hospitalists. The program focuses on developing Fellows into astute clinicians, innovative educators, dedicated advocates and compassionate physicians. Fellows are provided with the knowledge, skills, mentorship and resources needed to become leaders in the field and advance the care of hospitalized children and adolescents.

Fellows will complete core and individualized rotations at Norton Children's Hospital, the only free-standing children's hospital in the state. Norton Children's Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center with approximately 300 beds, offering critical care and a wide range of subspecialties. The Pediatric Hospitalist service manages over 5,000 admissions annually, providing care for general pediatric illnesses as well as complex, technology-dependent, surgical and behavioral health patients. Fellows will also spend time at Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital, which features a 14-bed pediatric unit, a 40-bed NICU and a 12-bed Pediatric Emergency Department. This site serves as the training location for community and newborn care experiences.

The PHM faculty team includes 25 pediatric faculty members, four medicine/pediatrics faculty members, four nurse clinicians and one fellowship coordinator. The faculty members are deeply engaged in clinical practice, teaching and mentoring and they hold key leadership roles in areas such as medical education, quality improvement, public health and advocacy.

The program includes a range of conferences and learning activities to address the core knowledge areas for pediatric hospitalists. Fellows participate in weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual conferences, such as the Department of Pediatrics Grand Rounds, PHM Divisional Conference and PHM National Fellows Conference. Additionally, the program accepts one Fellow per year, with the first Fellow having started in July 2023.

Norton Children's Hospital handles approximately 7,000 admissions annually, with an average daily census of 59 and an average length of stay of three days. At Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the Pediatric Hospitalist Service handles around 1,100 admissions annually, with an average daily census of 5 and an average length of stay of 1.7 days. This diverse clinical experience, combined with strong mentorship, prepares Fellows to become leaders in pediatric hospital medicine.
