Welcome From Division Chief
The University of Louisville Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases is dedicated to advancing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in children through excellence in clinical care, research, education and innovation. Our faculty, trainees and staff are united by a shared commitment to improving the health and well-being of infants, children and adolescents through compassionate care, scientific discovery and the development of future leaders in pediatric infectious diseases.
Our division is a dynamic hub of academic and research excellence. Our faculty are nationally recognized leaders in pediatric infectious diseases, healthcare epidemiology, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention. Through their leadership, scholarship and commitment to teaching, they have helped build a collaborative environment that supports innovation, advances patient care and promotes the highest standards of clinical excellence. We are proud of our longstanding tradition of preparing outstanding clinicians, educators and researchers who contribute meaningfully to pediatric healthcare at the local, regional and national levels.
Research is a cornerstone of our mission. Our current clinical and translational research efforts focus on improving treatments and outcomes for children facing common and serious infectious diseases. Faculty are actively investigating new therapies for congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease and COVID-19, with particular attention to medication safety, effectiveness and pharmacokinetics in pediatric patients. Additional studies are evaluating strategies to prevent neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection and improve outcomes for vulnerable newborns. Through these and other initiatives, our investigators are helping develop evidence-based approaches that improve care for children worldwide.
Our commitment to discovery is supported by a robust research infrastructure that includes collaborations with the University of Louisville Department of Microbiology and Immunology, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Laboratory, Norton Children's Research Institute and the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Norton Healthcare. Faculty and fellows also have access to the Child and Adolescent Health Research Design and Support Unit, creating exceptional opportunities for clinical, translational and outcomes-based research.
The division's academic productivity reflects its strong culture of scholarship and innovation. Between 2020 and 2023, faculty and fellows contributed 64 peer-reviewed publications and 73 scientific abstracts while securing nearly $1.9 million in grants and contracts. These accomplishments underscore our commitment to advancing knowledge and improving the care of children with infectious diseases.
Education and mentorship remain central to everything we do. Since 1994, our ACGME-accredited Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship has trained successful graduates who have gone on to become leaders in academic medicine, clinical care and research. By accepting one fellow every three years, the program provides an exceptional level of personalized mentorship and individualized training.
Our division is also home to a dedicated pediatric transplant and immunocompromised host infectious diseases service that is available around the clock, providing specialized expertise for some of the most medically complex children in our region. Combined with our strong focus on antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention, this service exemplifies our commitment to delivering the highest quality care to every patient we serve.
We invite you to learn more about our clinical programs, research initiatives and educational opportunities, and to join us in our mission to advance pediatric infectious diseases care through innovation, collaboration and academic excellence.
