Adult Congenital Heart Disease Fellowship

Overview

The Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Program at Norton Children’s Hospital is a collaboration between Norton Children’s Hospital, Norton Downtown Hospital, and the University of Louisville School of Medicine that is designed for patients born with congenital heart defects to transition smoothly from pediatric to adult cardiac care and experience comprehensive ongoing care as an adult. Our multi-disciplinary team offers echocardiography and advanced cardiac imaging by congenital-trained technicians and physicians, cardiopulmonary exercise stress testing, cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology interventions, congenital heart surgery, as well as transition readiness assessments and teaching, lifestyle counseling, cardio-obstetric care, mental health screening and treatment and medical management of the full range of conditions associated with congenital heart disease.  Our team offers 24/7 access to board-certified Adult Congenital physicians and advanced practice providers. The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at Norton Children’s and University of Louisville School of Medicine was the first Adult Congenital Heart Association-Accredited Comprehensive Care Center in the state of Kentucky.

Norton Children’s Hospital and the Novak Center for Children, where our primary ambulatory clinic is housed, are state-of-the-art, comprehensive centers. The University of Louisville School of Medicine is an integral part of a large and growing Health Science Center that includes more than 200,000 square feet of state-of-the-art research space, a comprehensive standardized patient clinic and one of the largest academic medical simulation centers in the United States.

The Norton/University of Louisville School of Medicine Adult Congenital Heart Disease Fellowship is a 2-year, multi-institutional, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited fellowship program, which aims to prepare trainees to practice competently and independently as experts in the clinical care of ACHD patients. The program also seeks to train future leaders who will advance the field of adult congenital heart disease through research and education.

The 2-year curriculum fulfills the requirements set forth by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) to become board-eligible for ACHD specialty certification, and the fellows are exposed to the full range of cardiovascular services for ACHD patients.  In addition, through the affiliation with the University Louisville School of Medicine, fellows have robust opportunities for research and involvement in medical education initiatives. The fellows train under the supervision of several board-certified ACHD cardiologists, who see the full breadth and complexity of ACHD. The ACHD program is integrated into both the categorical pediatric and adult cardiology fellowships, which allows for clinical and/or research collaboration with both adult and pediatric cardiologists, including subspecialists in the areas of cardiac catheterization/interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, advanced heart failure, pulmonary vascular disease, aortopathy, exercise physiology, advanced cardiac imaging, and pregnancy and cardiovascular disease.  Fellows also actively participate in dedicated conferences to discuss management issues in ACHD patients.
