Pediatric Electroencephalography NST Fellowship

The Pediatric Epilepsy Fellowship is a one-year ACGME accredited pediatric epilepsy fellowship training providing a comprehensive training experience addressing all aspects of EEG and epilepsy care.

Overview

The Non-Standard Training (NST) EEG Fellowship provides a comprehensive and immersive experience in electroencephalography and epilepsy, equipping fellows with the expertise required to navigate the complex clinical and neurophysiological aspects of the field. Through a combination of hands-on clinical training, multidisciplinary collaboration, and progressive responsibility, fellows develop the skills necessary to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care across a range of neurological conditions, with a particular focus on epilepsy.

Fellows gain extensive experience in the evaluation and management of patients with neurological disorders, performing detailed clinical assessments, developing differential diagnoses, and integrating EEG findings into clinical decision-making. Training includes proficiency in a wide range of EEG modalities, including standard and sleep-deprived EEGs, ambulatory EEG, and long-term video-EEG monitoring. Fellows also play an active role in patient and family communication, providing pre- and post-test counseling with an emphasis on clarity, empathy, and support.

A key component of the fellowship is participation in the evaluation of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy for surgical candidacy. Fellows work closely with a multidisciplinary epilepsy team to assess seizure semiology, neuroimaging, and EEG data, and contribute to surgical planning. They receive hands-on training in stereo-EEG, intracranial EEG monitoring with subdural grids and depth electrodes, and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. Additional experience in brain mapping techniques, including functional MRI and other advanced modalities, supports the development of comprehensive functional maps to guide surgical decision-making. Fellows also participate in postoperative care and long-term management, gaining insight into outcomes assessment and ongoing treatment strategies.

Throughout the program, fellows collaborate with a diverse team of healthcare professionals to develop and implement coordinated care plans. They are encouraged to engage with current research and evidence-based practices, applying new knowledge to enhance patient outcomes. Under the mentorship of experienced epileptologists and neurophysiologists, fellows progressively build independence while maintaining close faculty support. Opportunities for teaching and mentorship further strengthen their development as educators and future leaders in the field.

The fellowship includes structured procedural training to ensure competency across core areas of clinical neurophysiology. Fellows develop expertise in electrode application using the international 10–20 system, EEG interpretation, ambulatory and long-term monitoring, and epilepsy surgery evaluations. Additional training in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring provides exposure to techniques such as continuous EEG, evoked potentials, and electrocorticography.

Applicants must have completed a degree in medicine (MD, MBBS, or equivalent) from a recognized and accredited medical school. Additionally, applicants must have completed a postgraduate residency program in Neurology, Child Neurology, or Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. While training from an ACGME-accredited program is often preferred, we do acknowledge and accept diverse paths to neurology training and will consider applicants who have completed equivalent training in other countries, such as non-ACGME accredited neurology or child neurology programs. Each application will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, considering the depth, breadth, and quality of the applicant's clinical training International medical graduates must hold a valid certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
