Pediatric Epilepsy Fellowships

The Pediatric Epilepsy Fellowship is a one-year ACGME accredited pediatric epilepsy fellowship training providing a comprehensive training experience addressing all aspects of EEG and epilepsy care.

Overview

Our one-year, ACGME-accredited Pediatric Epilepsy Fellowship provides a focused and comprehensive training experience in all aspects of EEG and epilepsy care across inpatient, outpatient, and acute care settings. Building on the foundational skills developed during neurology or child neurology residency, the program offers advanced training in EEG interpretation and epilepsy management. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, fellows benefit from dedicated time for clinical practice, instruction, and mentorship, allowing them to develop the expertise and professional judgment required for high-quality patient care and independent practice.

The program is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and skills in the diagnostic evaluation and management of patients with epilepsy while supporting the ongoing development of epilepsy physicians in both academic and clinical settings. Through rigorous scholarship in an open and inquisitive environment, fellows are trained to become future leaders in the field. The program emphasizes clinical excellence through compassionate, patient-centered care and fosters a strong foundation in scientific thinking to address evolving challenges in epilepsy. A commitment to diversity, inclusion, and thoughtful discourse is central to the training experience.

Fellows gain extensive experience in diagnostic neurophysiology, including routine and prolonged outpatient and inpatient video-EEG monitoring in the ICU and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), as well as brain mapping and intraoperative electrocorticography. Training includes both phase I and phase II intracranial EEG monitoring, with exposure to subdural grids, depth electrodes, and advanced recording and reporting techniques. Additional instruction is provided in neuroimaging modalities such as MRI, functional MRI, PET, and SPECT, along with neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric evaluation, including WADA testing.

Clinical training spans both inpatient and outpatient pediatric epilepsy care. Fellows participate in a variety of specialized outpatient clinics, including neurostimulation, new-onset seizure, refractory epilepsy, ketogenic diet, and tuberous sclerosis clinics. At least a half-day each week is dedicated to outpatient evaluation and longitudinal management of patients with epilepsy and associated comorbidities. The program also includes a structured educational curriculum with opportunities for teaching and clinical research, supporting fellows in developing as both clinicians and educators. Upon completion of the fellowship, graduates are eligible to sit for the ABPN Epilepsy board certification examination.

This fellowship is intended primarily for graduates of ACGME-accredited child neurology residencies, though applicants trained in adult neurology or neurodevelopmental disabilities are also eligible. Throughout the program, fellows develop advanced competencies in epilepsy care while achieving proficiency in the six ACGME core competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.
