Department of Surgery
The Hiram C. Polk, Jr., MD Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine is recognized for its excellence in education, research and patient care. It is comprised of eight divisions (General Surgery, Transplant, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapeutics, Colorectal Surgery and Immunotherapy), supported by more than 50 full-time faculty members. With more than $5.7 million in NIH funding, the department ranks in the top 25 percent of U.S. medical schools and maintains a robust clinical research program backed by more than $30 million in endowments. The department offers two residency programs and six fellowships, contributing to its strong educational foundation.
For over 185 years, the department has been training surgeons, with the general surgery residency program at its core. This program emphasizes comprehensive training, graded responsibility and autonomy, preparing residents for both general practice and subspecialty fellowships. Many graduates have become leaders in academic surgery, serving as department chairs and presidents of national surgical organizations. As surgical practice evolves, the University of Louisville remains committed to blending time-honored traditions with modern advancements.
