Research
Research is a unique strength and a core mission of the Department of Surgery. Each surgical division has active research laboratory, clinical and health service research programs.
Research Overview
The Hiram C. Polk, Jr., MD Department of Surgery is committed to forging new paths in research and innovation. The department fosters an environment where discoveries flourish, as trainees and junior faculty are mentored to become surgeon–scientists. Our faculty members are engaged in basic and translational laboratory research, as well as clinical and health services research programs, supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense, the American Cancer Society and a variety of other funding agencies.
The Division of Immunotherapy is a premier research program, and the Price Institute for Surgical Research has trained and mentored students, residents and fellows for two generations. With more than $5.7 million in NIH funding, the department ranks in the top 25% of U.S. medical schools and has more than $30 million in endowments.
