What We Stand For

Since 1837, the University of Louisville Hiram C. Polk, Jr., MD Department of Surgery has upheld a tradition of excellence. Founded by Samuel Gross, the department has become a leading program in surgical education, research and patient care. Under the leadership of Hiram C. Polk, Jr., who chaired the department from 1971 to 2005, we established a renowned trauma center and made significant advancements in surgical infection, oncology and hand surgery, while mentoring future leaders in medicine.

We believe excellence is intentional and expected at every level. Our five-year general surgery residency program emphasizes advanced surgical skills and the doctor-patient relationship, with tailored opportunities for further research and specialized training, including global experiences. We are committed to innovative research and outstanding patient care, prioritizing surgical education to prepare our trainees for successful careers. Excellence isn’t an accident; it’s our mission.
