Surgical Oncology Fellowship

Our two-year surgical oncology fellowship includes clinical rotations, research, diverse surgical training and an optional HPB certification or MSc program.

Overview

We offer an ACGME-accredited two-year fellowship, combining four months of basic science research and 20 months of clinical rotations. Fellows work closely with faculty, gaining experience in all aspects of surgical oncology, including upper gastrointestinal, hepato-pancreatico-biliary, endocrine, melanoma and breast cancers. The fellowship emphasizes autonomy, fostering clinical judgment and expertise through one-on-one faculty relationships.

Fellows also have the opportunity to pursue additional basic science or clinical research, with the option to combine the fellowship with the University of Louisville’s MSc program in biostatistics and research design. Research is central to the program, with fellows generating important data and presenting findings at national meetings. They gain exposure to the brightest minds in research, with clinical research continuing after the laboratory phase, where important advancements in surgical oncology have been made.

The program also offers the chance to pursue Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary fellowship certification from the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, enhancing the fellow’s expertise in this specialized area of surgical oncology. The goal is to train compassionate, skilled surgical oncologists prepared to make significant contributions to patient care and the field of oncology.
