Palliative Medicine
The University of Louisville Division of Palliative Medicine provides specialized, person-centered care for individuals living with serious illnesses. Established in 2023 under the leadership of Christian Furman, M.D., the division provides palliative care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Supporting Patients and Families
Palliative care focuses on improving quality of life for people living with serious illnesses. Our team addresses the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs of patients while also providing support for their families and caregivers.
Faculty and healthcare professionals work together to provide care based on each patient’s individual needs, values and goals.
Palliative Care Services
Our team works alongside other healthcare specialists to help patients and families understand their care options and make informed medical decisions.
Palliative care services include:
- Management of pain and other symptoms
- Support for anxiety, nausea and shortness of breath
- Advance care planning
- Assistance with complex medical decisions
- Communication about treatment options and goals of care
- Emotional and spiritual support
- Support for family members and caregivers
Palliative care can be provided alongside treatments for a serious illness and can support patients at different stages of their care.

Whole-Person Care
Through symptom management, advance care planning and communication, the Division of Palliative Medicine helps patients and families navigate the challenges associated with serious illness.
The division also supports medical education and collaboration among healthcare professionals to strengthen the delivery of palliative care throughout the region.
