Palliative Medicine

The University of Louisville Division of Palliative Medicine provides specialized, patient-centered care for individuals living with serious illnesses. Established in 2023 under the leadership of Dr. Christian Furman, the division builds on a long-standing tradition of clinical excellence while advancing innovative approaches to palliative care across inpatient and outpatient settings.

Focused on improving quality of life, the division addresses the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients and their families through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach.

Faculty and care teams deliver comprehensive palliative services at UofL Health - UofL Hospital, UofL Health - Jewish Hospital, the UofL Health - Brown Cancer Center, and the Trager Institute Republic Bank Foundation Optimal Aging Clinic. 

Working alongside other health care specialists, the division helps patients navigate complex medical decisions, manage symptoms such as pain, anxiety, nausea, and shortness of breath, and align treatment plans with their personal values and goals.

Through expert symptom management, advance care planning, and compassionate support for patients and loved ones, the Division of Palliative Medicine is committed to enhancing well-being at every stage of serious illness.
