The University of Louisville Division of Palliative Medicine provides specialized care for patients living with serious illness, focusing on improving quality of life through comprehensive physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual support. Established in 2023, the division continues to expand access to high-quality palliative care while building on a longstanding commitment to patient-centered clinical excellence.
Through a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach, our physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains and other health professionals work closely with patients, families and care teams to align treatment plans with individual values, goals and preferences. By providing expert symptom management and compassionate support, the division helps patients and loved ones navigate the challenges of serious illness with dignity and confidence.
Areas of expertise
Our faculty and clinical teams assist patients and families by:
- Managing symptoms such as pain, nausea, anxiety and shortness of breath
- Clarifying treatment options and supporting informed decision-making
- Facilitating communication among patients, families and health care providers
- Providing emotional, psychological and spiritual support throughout all stages of illness
- Assisting with advance care planning and advance directives
Fellowship training
As the first palliative medicine fellowship offered by a Kentucky university, the University of Louisville has been training future leaders in palliative and hospice medicine for nearly two decades.
The fellowship provides comprehensive clinical and educational experiences across various care settings, preparing physicians to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to patients with serious illness.
