Overview
Our plastic surgery division offers both independent and integrated models. Both programs are very competitive for matching. Our independent model program is a three-year program after graduating prerequisite five years of training in General Surgery. Our integrated model is a six-year program with strong emphasis in general surgery specialties for the first three years. Both programs are ACGME accredited and designed to provide graduating residents with a comprehensive clinical experience and knowledge of the basic and advanced principles Plastic Surgery. Our mission is to train conscientious, compassionate, caring, thoughtful and competent plastic surgeons that are well versed in scientific analysis and research principles. Our trainees graduate with the confidence knowledge and experience to meet any professional challenge.
Trainees rotate through several affiliated hospitals UofL Health - UofL Hospital, UofL Health - Jewish Hospital, Norton Hospital, Norton Children’s Hospital, Jewish South Hospital, UofL Health - Mary Elizabeth Hospitals and Louisville VA Hospital. Our residents have exposure to all areas of plastic surgery including aesthetics, facial trauma, burns, general reconstruction, pediatric plastic surgery, craniofacial plastic surgery and hand upper extremity. Additional rotations in oculoplastic, orthopedics, dermatology, maxillofacial, ENT are required. In addition to our core faculty, our residents are also provided a strong opportunity to work with 20 other plastic surgeons in our community that have gratis faculty appointments. Our gratis faculty are very committed to the mission of our program and heavily involved in our didactics and clinical teaching.
Our academic program is extensive with an inclusive conference schedule of 350 conferences and weekly grand rounds to cover 50 plus core topics. Other weekly conferences include indications, in-service quiz reviews, hand case reviews, Moh’s, craniofacial syndromes conference, photo indications and many more. Each trainee is expected to complete, present and publish a research project. Conferences are mandatory as academics is prioritized over service in our program. Our residents perform competitively on the in-service each year which ultimately prepares them well for the written exam component of the ABPS American Board of Plastic Surgery. With our extensive academic and clinical commitment, our graduates have done very well on the oral component of the ABPS as well.
