We are driven by a mission to deliver excellence in patient care, research and education. As one of the largest surgical oncology divisions in the country, our team is composed entirely of highly specialized surgical oncologists, each focused on a small number of disease types. This depth of expertise allows our faculty to lead multidisciplinary teams and provide innovative, high-quality care that improves outcomes for patients across the region.
Our surgeons work collaboratively with experts throughout UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center and the broader region—including Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and West Virginia—ensuring patients receive comprehensive care through disease-specific teams specializing in breast, gastrointestinal, liver, pancreas, esophageal, gastric, endocrine and melanoma cancers.
As an academic cancer center, we’re equally committed to training the next generation of surgical oncology leaders. Our two-year fellowship program combines hands-on clinical training with opportunities in basic and translational research. Fellows rotate with faculty mentors and gain deep surgical experience in complex procedures while participating in patient care across multiple hospitals. The program also allows for additional research, a potential MSc degree and the opportunity to earn certification from the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.
Our faculty are actively engaged in groundbreaking research supported by the National Institutes of Health and other major funding bodies. Ongoing investigations span a wide range of cancer types and topics.
In addition to our robust laboratory efforts, our division has led more than 75 clinical trials, enrolling over 14,000 patients. These include national, multicenter cancer studies led by our faculty that are shaping the future of surgical oncology care.
