Research Overview
In the Division of Colorectal Surgery's Digestive Surgery Research Laboratory, we are driven by one clear mission: to improve lives through transformative research. Our lab brings together investigators from across the U.S. and around the world, united by a passion for unraveling the complex biology of gastrointestinal diseases and developing better treatments—and one day, cures.
Located in the Medical Dental Research Building within the Price Institute for Surgical Research, our lab specializes in basic molecular research focused on:
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Colorectal cancer
We foster collaboration across disciplines and institutions, working closely with leading experts in genetics, pathology and bioinformatics. This spirit of teamwork fuels cutting-edge research and has resulted in a broad portfolio of high-impact publications.
Each year, one or two exceptional candidates are selected as Price Research Fellows—a unique opportunity for general surgeons-in-training to earn a PhD in Physiology while conducting full-time research in our laboratory. Fellows receive mentorship, salary and benefits funded by the Price Institute Trust and support for J-1 visa sponsorship when needed.
In addition to foundational science, our research team plays an active role in clinical trials, giving patients access to emerging therapies and surgical innovations. This dual focus ensures our scientific findings are quickly translated into meaningful advances in patient care—especially for those living with inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer.
Our fellows regularly present at national and international scientific meetings and six have earned PhD degrees during their research fellowships. We are proud to be a training ground for the next generation of physician-scientists committed to transforming colorectal care.
